New Giveaway for The Hive

I am running another Goodreads Giveaway for copies of one of my favorite stories: The Hive, Book Two of the Dave Brewster Series. In this story, he discovers that humanity did not originate on Earth, and in fact, the Society of Humanity has existed for eons, and now includes a vast number of planets in more than one galaxy. And yet, even billions of years later, humans have not really changed, and many of the faults and foibles of our existence continue across the universe. The Hive is a tale of mankind’s weaknesses and most enduring strengths.  It’s a ride you won’t soon forget.

The Dark Side of my Mind

Demonic-teaserIt won’t be long now before the launch of Book 4 of the Modern Prophet series, also known as Demonic. Just today I had a e-mail conversation with a friend about graphic violence in novels. While I generally stay away from that, when I started this book, I decided that I wanted to scare the heck out of myself. Well, I think I succeeded. After one more review by my editor and one more read by me, you will be able to find out for yourself.

Demonic is the tale of a man named Bill Watson who finds his world spinning out of control, not that differently from our own. It starts with terrorist beheadings, followed by child enslavement and nuclear war. Then it gets violent. It is a story of the ultimate battle mankind must join between the forces of good and evil. Yet this battle is bigger than our meager planet. Supremely evil forces are at work, and Bill and his newfound sister are the only beings in the universe who can end the reign of terror and reestablish the equilibrium that maintains our existence. Bill and Mary discover their connection to something greater than themselves, and learn that our faith in the Divine is our only hope.

If you choose to join the Adventurers Club, which you can find here, you can get the e-book version of Demonic free! I hope you will enjoy it!

Hand of God Release

HAND-OF-GODHand of God, book three of the Modern Prophet series will be released for Kindle on March 17, 2015. Follow this link to take a look and preorder.

In this adventure, Josh Carpenter lives in the not too distant future in the megalopolis of San Diego. Josh is a NEM (Not Enhanced or Modified person) living in a region where DNA enhancement and replacing body parts with bionic versions is the norm. But there is something different about this NEM.

Josh begins to exhibit unique talents that quickly draw the attention of both those wishing to help him and those who would prefer him to be dead. As wars break out and terrorist attacks spread around the globe, Josh finds himself caught between the forces of good and evil, but which is which? The future of life on Earth and possibly the universe itself will rely on the choices this young man makes. Will humanity survive? I guess that is up to Josh.

The paperback version of Hand of God will release shortly after the e-book version. Also check out all my works on my Amazon author page. Join the Adventure!

Get Ready for the Modern Prophet Series

I am thrilled to announce that the first book of the Modern Prophet series is about to be published. Two Doors will be available in paperback and e-book versions. First, a bit about the series:

These novels tell the tales of young men who discover they have very unique abilities. Their talents bring the unwanted attention of others wishing to control them, and failing that, kill them. The stories are very fast paced and the action builds as more and greater hazards befall our hero. They will encounter friends to help them as well as foes trying to stop them. The plots are generally set in our time with current events as a backdrop, although as things devolve, the actions begin to stray into fantasy.

Two Doors is the story of Peter Smith, a recent college graduate who moves from Iowa to New York to build a life and find his fortune. All his life, Peter has suffered with terrifyingly lucid dreams. Now, some of those dreams are starting to come true. As his talent grows, he gains the attention of two powerful families, each trying to control his gift. Emmanuel Prospect and William Satori each offer him incredible wealth and safety if Peter chooses them, but it is all too good to be true. Why are they so interested in him and his dreams? But all is not as it seems.

The struggle to control Peter leads him down a horrific path from terrorist attacks and murder to global war and anarchy. Events move from more mundane events like car accidents and muggings toward almost supernatural battles that could lead to the destruction of Earth. Peter must choose which door to open, all the while uncertain what will happen if he chooses poorly.

I have added some of my favorite things into the story, and many of the places I have lived and visited. I hope those add some depth and warmth to the tale. Keep an eye out for the cover reveal in the coming days, and please Join the Adventure!

The Essence of My Writing (So Far)

Remembrances-webIt was quite a revelation when it struck me. Subconsciously, all of my novels have the same theme. The protagonist is just an ordinary person who suddenly finds his circumstance turned totally upside-down, and is thrust into unusual situations that involve incredible danger and evil. Perhaps that is the grist of many book and movie themes, but frankly, I had not recognized the consistency of it in my works until a couple of days ago. It began with my first book, Remembrances, which is not a novel at all. That book was written to help others realize that we are all interconnected spiritually and that the events in our lives are the results of our choices. It also focused heavily on the Will of God (I use the term Tao quite a bit), which is the current in the flow of spirituality, leading us where we need to be. If we go with it, good but at times uncomfortable things will happen to us. If we resist, we will be pummeled by the force of it.

In the sci-fi series, The Dave Brewster Series, an out-of-work accountant finds himself recruited to travel into the future to help mankind expand into the stars. In each book of the series, Dave encounters new and more dangerous forces out there, and must rely on his friends and dumb luck to keep himself alive and the galaxy from destruction. That is, he is led where he needs to be and is successful because he allows himself to be led.

In the fantasy series, The Heartstone Series, a major earthquake unleashes unearthly forces on Bill Marshall’s sheep ranch. He must find the cause of the invasion and stop the bad guys before they destroy Earth or enslave everyone. Once again, a rapid series of events leads him down a path that can ultimately save his family and our planet. He learns to go with the flow of events and ultimately succeeds, although he faces overwhelming challenges.

The series I am working on now is tentatively entitled The Modern Prophet Series. To date, each book is not directly related to the others; they stand on their own. But in each, the hero begins as a normal enough person, but begins to have premonitions or new unusual powers that get the attention of good and evil forces that want to bend those talents to their own bidding. The protagonist must make many choices which could turn out very badly for him and everyone else.

So, what does all of that mean? I suppose it means I have a real need to express how each of us has great talents that we can use to help all of mankind. We may not have a fleet of starships like Dave or the ultimate power in the universe like Bill, but still we can make a difference. That must be why I write this way. I am surprised I did not notice this before. Join the Adventure!

Choosing settings for books

TheAccord_frontI suppose it makes perfect sense for writers to use their own favorite places as the settings for their stories. Both Dave Brewster from the sci-fi series and Bill Marshall from the Heartstone series come from San Diego County, where I live now. Of course, in both of those genres (especially sci-fi), the odds of staying there very long are pretty low. That’s one of the many things I love about science fiction. I can create my own worlds and the Beings that inhabit them. Take the Vanda planetoid from The Accord pictured here. It is a massive constructed planet hurtling through space, populated by Vanda’s massive brain, as well as millions of other cyborgs and billions of human cargo. My cover designer, Ron Calica, has a knack for bringing those places and creatures to life. While his vision may not tie 100% with mine, I hope you can agree that his work is amazing.

The most recent books I am working on or have written bring me back to Earth, which is comforting. Two feature protagonists living in the San Diego area. Another is from Iowa (where I went to college and spent many family vacations) who moves to New York City (where my son lives) to make his fortune. I have to admit that I find that connection to things in my own experience very reassuring, like the couch I sit on while typing. My stories also feature my favorite international destinations, like Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Sao Paulo and Mexico. Hopefully, these connections to real places that folks are familiar with will help them connect to my characters and stories. What do you think?

Racheting up the blogosphere

I have decided to write blog postings on the news as well as information on my books. You will note that the site has been reconfigured to work better for this expanded narrative. Please add your comments to anything I post. Although it might not seem so, current events do drive the narratives of my works. You might think that sounds counterintuitive for science fiction and fantasy, but frankly, much of what’s going on in the world seems out of this world too.

Your input will help me put together new stories. I only have one brain, and I need lots of feedback on how I’m doing. I plan to post chapters of my upcoming works as well. Your thoughtful feedback is always welcome. Right now, I’m working on book three of my Modern Prophet series, which you’ve never heard of. Well, the first two books are written, but not published yet. The Two Doors is awaiting cover art, and Prophecy is being edited. There is also a fifth book in the Dave Brewster series (The Accord) which will be published next. My cover artist has been going through some issues, but is now colorizing it now.

But enough about books for right now. My first non-book blog entry will be on quantitative easing, the US government’s printing of $85 billion in new currency each month. This is a disaster in the making, but I won’t pollute this entry with that. I look forward to your feedback.

Available at a bookstore near you

I just received a second approval from a major national bookstore chain (I am not allowed to mention the name). Once they process the orders, six of my seven novels will be test marketed in different stores across the country. Please look for The Dave Brewster and Heartstone series books at your neighborhood store in the coming months.

Also, while you’re thinking about it, download a free e-book of The Hive right now! There’s only a week left on the promotion, so hurry. Here is the link.
